A graph model for probabilities of nested conditionals

چکیده

Abstract We define a model for computing probabilities of right-nested conditionals in terms graphs representing Markov chains. This is an extension the simple from Wójtowicz and (Erkenntnis, 1–35. 10.1007/s10670-019-00144-z , 2019). In this study we focus on problem conditionals; do not discuss questions concerning logical metalogical issues such as setting up axiomatic framework, inference rules, defining semantics, proving completeness, soundness etc. Our theory motivated by possible-worlds approach (the direct inspiration Stalnaker Bernoulli models); however, our generally more flexible. paper conditionals, discussing them detail. graph account unified way both shallow deep former being typical spaces, latter McGee’s Kaufmann’s causal models). particular, status Import-Export Principle PCCP. briefly some methodological constraints admissible models analyze with respect them. also illustrates general finding explications philosophically important notions applying mathematical methods analyzing philosophical issues.

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Probabilities of Conditionals and Conditional Probabilities Ii

A dams's thesis about indicative conditionals is that their assertIlability goes by the conditional subjective probability of the consequent given the antecedent, in very much the same way that assertability normally goes by the subjective probability of truth.' The thesis is well established; the remaining question is how it may best be explained. The nicest explanation would be that the truth...

The Probabilities of Conditionals Revisited

According to what is now commonly referred to as "the Equation" in the literature on indicative conditionals, the probability of any indicative conditional equals the probability of its consequent of the conditional given the antecedent of the conditional. Philosophers widely agree in their assessment that the triviality arguments of Lewis and others have conclusively shown the Equation to be t...

Revision Sequences and Nested Conditionals

The truth conditions for conditional sentences have been well-studied, but few compelling attempts have been made to define means of evaluating iterated or nested conditionals. In particular , most approaches impose very few constraints on the set of conditionals an agent can hold after revision of its belief set. In this paper we describe the method of natural revision that ensures the preserv...

Conditionals, Conditional Probabilities, and Conditionalization

Philosophers investigating the interpretation and use of conditional sentences have long been intrigued by the intuitive correspondence between the probability of a conditional ‘if A, then C’ and the conditional probability of C, given A. Attempts to account for this intuition within a general probabilistic theory of belief, meaning and use have been plagued by a danger of trivialization, which...
